Guys, spring is almost here. That means it's time to get out and shoot again and stop hiding inside. If you're a photographer and you really want to up your game, getting out and networking with other photographers and taking classes and workshops is the best way to do so. As a full time photographer I can't stress enough the importance of working and networking with other photographers. I am always looking for new classes, workshop and meetups to attend myself because they are an invaluable source of knowledge and networking. For the past 2 years I've had a great time teaching photography classes here in Logan and I'm way excited for the next cycle of classes to start. Whether you're a brand new photographer who just got your camera, or a professional looking to add some new tricks to your skill set, I'm sure there is something you can learn at one of these classes.

Introduction to Portrait Lighting Workshop

Where: Cache Valley Center for the Arts
When: April 9th & 23rd from 9am to 1pm
Cost: $98
This is class a blast! We're totally focused on learning studio and location lighting. It's a two day workshop, that will be completely hands on, so bring your cameras. We'll start with the basics and teach you everything you need to know to get comfortable learning off camera lighting. Whether you walk into a studio or are shooting on location, this class will teach you how to control lighting in any situation. We'll cover topic such as:
  • Getting your flash off your camera
  • Basic portrait lighting setups
  • Shooting in a studio
  • Shooting on location
  • Camera settings for using flash
  • What modifier to use
  • How to balance or beat the ambient light
For this class I do expect you to have a basic understanding of manual mode and we won't cover much about composition and editing. If you're looking for those, check out my other classes below, otherwise CLICK HERE to register!

Introduction to Photography

Where: Bridgerland Applied Technology College
When: April 12th through May 14th on Tuesday nights at 5pm.
Cost: $85
This is my Photography 101 Class. If you are just starting out and want to learn how to really control your camera, this is the class for you. We're going to cover all the basics from what your buttons on your camera do, all the way to basic editing programs. We'll be outside shooting, a lot (because that's what we love right?!). We won't have much in class time and will mostly be meeting on location and practice and learning new techniques. If you want a fun, interactive start to using your camera then you'll want to check this class out. We'll be covering topics such as:
  • Manual Mode (Shutter Speed, ISO, Aperture)
  • Basic Composition Rules Guidelines
  • Tips for shooting landscapes, portraits, macro and night photography
  • Basic Studio Photography
  • Basic Editing
This is class is 10 weeks long, interactive and for the beginner. If you're interested in registering CLICK HERE.

Introduction to Portrait Photography

Where: Bridgerland Applied Technology College
When: April 12th through May 14th on Tuesday nights at 7pm.
Cost: $85
I teach this class because this is my baby. I'm a portrait photographer. I LOVE shooting portraits. This class is there for those who have interest in shooting portraits for others either as a hobby, part time or full time business. This is all about people. We'll cover the basics, like manual mode, and there will be some overlap from my Intro to Photography Class as Bridgerland, but everything we talk about in this class will be about shooting portraits. We're going to shoot portraits of each other, professional models, people off the street that we find, everyone. Because that's what we do. I'll be teaching you how to:
  • Work fast in manual mode and Aperture and Shutter Priority modes.
  • Pose and compose shots of individuals, couples and families.
  • Natural light vs Artificial Light
  • Working with your subject
  • Editing for portraits
  • Basic business and marketing
If you want to shoot people, there isn't another class in northern Utah similar to this one. You'll love it. We'll be outside, shooting and having fun for ten weeks. If you're interested in registering CLICK HERE.

If you have any questions about any of the classes, feel free to comment below or email me anytime.

Thanks!

Samsung S7 Photoshoot:

As a full time professional photographer and educator, I get asked all the time about my equipment and what I use. A lot of time during my classes my students joke about how they need more gear or need to win the lottery. I don't think this is true. While yes, quality gear makes my job as a photographer so much easier, the truth is that knowing how to light, pose, shoot and edit an image is extremely more important. To make my point, and as an exercise to push my own skill set, I decided to do a shoot with my smart phone. I found a great friend of mine Christie Berube, who also happens to be a professional photographer and a model, and decided to shoot some images on my phone (yes, really). So below there are a bunch of images, some shot on my phone, some shot on my professional equipment. To me the take away lessons from this are this are a couple things.

The Take Away's:

1) To my fellow photographers: Don't get caught up in buying the fanciest gear. Yes, your right, the really nice gear down make your job so much easier. But if you can't afford to get it right now, don't let it stop you from pushing yourself and creating great images with what you have. The gear matters a lot less than you think it does. Really.

2) To my clients/non photographers: When you're shopping for a photographer, don't get caught up on what they shoot with, heck, don't even both asking what/how they shoot. All that really matters in the end result. Find a photographer that can consistently create great images and has a STYLE that you love. What/how they get those images is really pretty irrelevant.

Technical Specs on the Shoot:

For those photographers that want know what I shot these images on, because you know. Gear. I shot the smart phone images on the Samsung Galaxy S7. I shot the non smartphone images on my Canon 5Diii and either the Sigma 35 f1.4 or the Canon 85 f1.2. Lighting for all the images was either a $25 Neewer CN-160 video light, natural light or a large silver/white reflector.  All the images were retouched in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

The Images:

These images are mixed up, if you want to know which images where shot on my phone and which were shot on my DSLR, feel free to comment below with your guesses and I'll let you know if you're right!

 The Behind the Scenes Images:

If you want to see what had set up, you can see some behind the scene images taken by my friend Sheree Allen here.

Sometimes it's the middle of March in Utah and you want to pretend it's summer and warm for your engagement photos, so you drive up to Bear Lake and shoot on the beach. Totally worth drive, it looked warm and it's so calm and beautiful up this early in the year. Max and Alexis were an absolute blast to shoot with and we had a great time! Just a couple months and they'll be getting all married and that.

Until next time,

K & J called me up a few weeks back for an engagement shoot, and they wanted something different and fun. After a bit of talking, we decided to head out to the Salt Flats because they loved a shoot I'd done a few weeks back out there, and boy we got lucky! It was so calm and gorgeous out there last night! These two are a ton of fun and totally willing to make some killer images. I really love how they look!

I met David a few months backing when he hired me to shoot headshot's for the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Utah State University and since then we've had the chance to get to know each other pretty well. This past weekend I got to meet all of his family when we shot their family photos and they're all a great bunch! Check out a few of my favorite images below:
