Guys, spring is almost here. That means it's time to get out and shoot again and stop hiding inside. If you're a photographer and you really want to up your game, getting out and networking with other photographers and taking classes and workshops is the best way to do so. As a full time photographer I can't stress enough the importance of working and networking with other photographers. I am always looking for new classes, workshop and meetups to attend myself because they are an invaluable source of knowledge and networking. For the past 2 years I've had a great time teaching photography classes here in Logan and I'm way excited for the next cycle of classes to start. Whether you're a brand new photographer who just got your camera, or a professional looking to add some new tricks to your skill set, I'm sure there is something you can learn at one of these classes.

We'll start with the basics and teach you everything you need to know to get comfortable learning off camera lighting. Whether you walk into a studio or are shooting on location, this class will teach you how to control lighting in any situation. We'll cover topic such as:

We won't have much in class time and will mostly be meeting on location and practice and learning new techniques. If you want a fun, interactive start to using your camera then you'll want to check this class out. We'll be covering topics such as:
  • Manual Mode (Shutter Speed, ISO, Aperture)

Introduction to Portrait Photography

Where: Bridgerland Applied Technology College
When: April 12th through May 14th on Tuesday nights at 7pm.
Cost: $85
I teach this class because this is my baby. I'm a portrait photographer. I LOVE shooting portraits. This class is there for those who have interest in shooting portraits for others either as a hobby, part time or full time business. This is all about people. We'll cover the basics, like manual mode, and there will be some overlap from my Intro to Photography Class as Bridgerland, but everything we talk about in this class will be about shooting portraits. We're going to shoot portraits of each other, professional models, people off the street that we find, everyone. Because that's what we do. I'll be teaching you how to:
  • Work fast in manual mode and Aperture and Shutter Priority modes.
  • Pose and compose shots of individuals, couples and families.
  • Natural light vs Artificial Light
  • Working with your subject
  • Editing for portraits
  • Basic business and marketing
If you want to shoot people, there isn't another class in northern Utah similar to this one. You'll love it. We'll be outside, shooting and having fun for ten weeks. If you're interested in registering CLICK HERE.

As photographers lot of time we get stuck thinking we need to have the best gear to get great images, and that's not true. Sure nice lenses and gear make getting great images easier, but they still don't do it for you. For years I shot with only one or two cheap ($75 or less) speedlights at weddings, commercial gigs, and portrait sessions. Even now the speedlights I use most of the time are only $150. In this class we'll teach you how to use just one cheap speedlight to get great portraits. We'll cover the basics of settings, where to put your light, and how to shoot events with a single speedlight. All of the equipment we'll be using for lighting in the class will cost less than $150. This is a great class for anyone looking to get into off camera lighting without spending a lot of time or money to get the basics down.

During this class you'll be able to learn:
-Finding the right camera settings
-On camera speedlights
-Bouncing Light
-Reflectors
-Working with wireless triggers
-Mixing ambient and flash
-Light Modifiers
-Adding a second light
-Working with your subject to get great portraits
-Hands on shooting with a professional model

Date: March 12th
Time: 9am to 1pm
Price: $50/person

What to bring:
-Camera/Lens
-Batteries
-SD Card
-Tripod (if desired)
-Speedlight (if you own one, otherwise you'll be able to use mine)
-Light Stand, Triggers, Umbrella (if you own them)

Reviews from previous students:

"The lighting class taught by Mike Johnson through the CVCA is an amazing class.  Mike teaches everything from getting the flash off the camera to color gels, modifiers, and different light set ups.  He always had a willing and capable model for the class, he covers the inverse square law and qualities of light.  If you're ready to take the next step with off camera flash, this is an excellent class." -John Hart-

"I really enjoyed the lighting class.  Mike was very professional and had professional models each week to practice shooting.  He was always coming up with new and fresh ideas for different lighting techniques which really helped me to think outside of the box.  I would highly recommend the class!" -Kaylin Thompson-
